Could Al Golden's recruiting problems at the University of Miami be over? Today the Hurricanes landed a commitment from five-star offensive tackle Kc McDermott out of Palm Beach Central High. The commitment is an early win for Golden's 2014 class, and one of the 'Canes first big catch since the NCAA-investigation storm clouds started to part.

McDermott had narrowed his choice down to Miami and Notre Dame. Obviously, Notre Dame seemed strong coming off a BCS Championship game appearance, but apparently the State of South Florida connection prevailed.

"Everything Miami offered, Notre Dame offered," McDermott told The Sun-Sentinel. "I just couldn't be that far away from my family and my girlfriend."

Of course, McDermott's older brother Shane is currently the starting center for the Hurricanes. That might have helped some too.

Coach Golden has openly complained about the incalculable effects the NCAA's lagging investigation into the program has caused, and claimed that opposing coaches are using the investigation against the 'Canes on the recruiting trail.

However, now that it appears the NCAA has seriously botched the investigation and the 'Canes' punishment may not be as bad as it once seemed, recruiting may get easier.

In fact, McDermott seemed to be inspired by Golden's handling of the difficult situation.

"If you go through all the tough times he's been through -- he had chances to leave, but he chose Miami and he's turned it around," he says.

Though its still very early in the cycle (the 2013 class is about a year a way from being officially inked), Golden is off to a good start for 2014. Rivals.com currently ranks the 'Canes as having the 9th best class for the year.
