Fashion photography is usually meant to have a lifespan of about a month. Once next month's issue comes out and next season's clothes debut the image loses its relevancy. Photography duo Hunter & Gatti, who have shot for Flaunt magazine and international editions of Vogue, decided to find a second life for their work by emphasizing the art behind the image and obscuring the natural commercial aspects of the work.
"After one month it disappears forever," says Christian Borillo, one half of the Spanish duo. "What we're trying to do is kind of create a new life for the pictures that make them unique forever."
The duo starts experimenting with reimagining their images in mixed medium less than a year ago, but the results are already on display at Flaunt magazine's "Affordable Care" display during Art Basel at Mana Wynwood. David LaChapelle, Rob Montgomery, Petra Cortright, and Vance Lorenzini also have work on display at the exhibit which is open to the Public through Saturday at 6 p.m.
The four works on display, culled from a New York exhibit last month, show a progressive obscuration of their original works. The styling and commercial aspects of the work are painted over, and the duo aims to bring out the original artistic intention of the show. Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang and model Gertrude Hegelund are featured in the works.
"What we try to get is the girl and the original mood that we were going for," says Borillo.
"A picture is just a moment, and when you're painting over you can work more on the project," he adds. "You can get more involved and everything changes. It's more organic."
"Affordable Care" is free to the public from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Mana Wynwood, 318 NW 23rd Stree, Miami, Fl.
