We've kissed September goodbye. Fall is well upon us, which means for Miamians nothing but some obnoxious posts on Facebook and less-than-sweltering heat.
We should celebrate our independence from seasonal life by carrying on as per usual, and that means seeking out the free ways to have fun in the sun, or just stay up late enough that the sun becomes a thing of fantasy.

Monday
- Work/Work: New Works by MDC Faculty: Miami Dade College is always showing off neat works by their talented students in the Freedom Tower, but the professors need a little admiration, too. It's open all week, really, but offers a nice easy transition into the week (you're still hung over, we get it).
Tuesday
- Tony's Rockin' Karaoke Birthday with DJ Chris Podschun and Shelly Novak: You may have done karaoke before, but karaoke with SoBe drag idol Shelly Novak is not the average drunken singalong. She hosts every Tuesday night at Jazid, but this edition is special, because it's all in the owner's (dis)honor.
Thursday
- Closing Reception: Sunday in the Park: It's your last chance to catch New York-based Sarah Crowner's debut exhibition in Miami, featuring panels of raw and painted canvas sewn together in installations. Locust Projects sends her off with a site-responsive performance by the Peter London Global Dance Company. The reception begins at 7 p.m.
- Science Up Close: A new installment at the Frost Museum welcomes the public into casual group conversations about science with visiting scientists. This month's kick-off event is "Accelerating Our Understanding of Particle Physics" featuring Dr. Pete Markowitz, at 6:30 p.m.
- Fall Semester: Discussion on Society and Culture: Join MDC's MOAD all around the Miami Design District as they welcome theorists, critics, and architects to speak on various topics in contemporary society and culture, both Thursday and Friday from 4 to 9 p.m.
Friday
- III Points: You don't need a ticket to enjoy a lot of what III Points has to offer. Check the guide in this week's edition of the New Times to see what sort of fun you can get into, gratis.
- Planetarium Astro Jam: Expand your mind and take in the ever-expanding Universe. In partnership with the Borscht Film Festival, the special event features the Miami premiere of filmmaker Bernardo Britto's animated short film, "Yearbook," a 2014 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for Animation. The night at Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science will have live music, animation, improvisational dance projections and all the wonders of existence. They've got free food and drink, too, so come around 6:30 p.m. and stay through to 10:30. Free admission with RSVP via http://bit.ly/AstroJam.
