As if your Basel schedule weren't already tight enough, OHWOW's It Ain't Fair has announced a seriously buzz-worthy lineup that just might make you rethink your seemingly important schmoozing sessions at the other fairs.
OHWOW, the Miami-born, Los Angeles-based gallery, is marking its fifth and final year of It Ain't Fair by occupying a new, 6,000-square-foot space on South Beach. For their grand finale, they're bringing some big names and unique assets -- including a week of live programming from their pirate station, Know Wave Radio; a nightly soup kitchen; and art by James Franco. Yes, THAT James Franco.
The actor/artist/author/director/student and modern-day Renaissance man will exhibit a video project collaboration with Laurel Nakadate, as well as two solo works for the group show. Spokespersons for the fair couldn't confirm Franco's attendance, but didn't count it out, either. (So they're telling us there's a chance.)
Alongside Franco's work will be pieces by Dan Colen, Diana Al-Hadid, Julia Chiang, and almost 30 others.
"This being our last year doing it, all of the artists really stepped up and contributed significant works for the exhibition. It's by far the strongest group show we've ever presented from top to bottom," says Al Moran, co-founder of OHWOW.
The radio lineup is equally impressive.
"Know Wave will be hosted by Aaron Bondaroff and there will be DJ sets and interviews throughout the day by musicians and artists such as Nate Lowman, Bert Rodriguez, Physical Therapy, Total Freedom, Semen Sperms, Eric Duncan, Rub-n-Tug, Lucien Smith, Nelleka, José Parlá, Reza Nader the Arab Parrot, Julian and Stray Rats, Brian DeGraw, plus a whole slew of special guests," Moran adds.
And, if you've blown all your bucks buying art, their community soup kitchen will be open every night from 5 to 7 p.m., offering up free meals to anyone who's hungry.
OHWOW will also be hosting a book release and signing event for fashion photog Terry Richardson's new book Terrywood Friday night from 7 to p.m. at the OHWOW/STND Book Store at The Standard Spa.
That's enough to keep you busy all week long. And fed, too.
OHWOW's It Ain't Fair opens with a reception on December 6 from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m., and runs December 7th and 8th from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and December 9th and 11th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 743 Washington Avenue. Visit their website.
