Never trust somebody who doesn't like dogs. Never. As well
as being man's best friend, they're forgiving, generous and generally better
people than people. So when you have a chance, make them feel special. That
means showing up at Coral Gables Art Cinema this Friday at 6 p.m. as the cinema
serves up a special night of activities for our four-legged family members to
coincide with the premiere of My Dog Tulip, a movie that promises to be as
close to heart of dog lovers as Marley and Me, but hopefully without the 20-minute balling session at the end of the flick.
Billed as a "pet-tastic" event, the furry fun takes place
outside of the cinema in its plaza. There will be dog goodie giveaways and
other pet friendly events. And if you don't have a dog of your own, there's
even more reason to show up as there will be dog adoptions available from
Friends Forever Rescue--they're actually bringing dogs.
The event leads up to the premiere screenings, 7 and 9 p.m. of the animated film based on J.R.
Ackerley's memoir by the same name, a work Truman Capote called "one of the
greatest books ever written by anybody in the world." The film recounts Ackerley's
experience with a willful German shepherd that he adopted late in life. As well
as being funny and heart-warming the film is also innovative as it was the
first animated feature ever to be entirely hand drawn and painted utilizing
paperless computer technology. Check out the trailer:
There is some star power in the voices lent to the animated
characters, including Isabella Rossellini, Christopher Plummer, and the late
Lynn Redgrave. Just because it's animated doesn't mean the movie is for kids,
as it does show graphic depictions of animal sex. Even though the night is
dedicated to the dogs, they still aren't allowed into the screenings - after all,
this isn't Paris - so make plans
for a quick drop off or pet-sitting if you plan to catch the flick on opening
night.
My Dog Tulip opens on Friday with showings at 7 and 9 p.m. at the Coral
Gables Art Cinema
