Everyone and their mother seems to be offering a free Memorial Day Weekend mixtape, but for something with a little more indie-type flavor and hometown, grassroots pride, check out this offering from 10K Islands. The label and blog is the newest spinoff of Honor Roll Music, with a sharper focus on just three acts: Awesome New Republic, ANR's John Hancock solo, and Plains (another offshoot, somewhat, of ANR).
Memorial Day Weekend 2010 Mix From 10K Islands; ANR and Millionyoung Homecoming Show Tonight at Bar
May 28, 2010 | 1:40pm|
The handy little mix provides a succinct selection of feel-good tunes for your outdoorsy activities this weekend, with a blend of national artists you should know about, and a couple of local jams. From the former camp, standouts include an offering from L.A. producer Flying Lotus, and from the Brooklyn kind-of-hip-hop group Das Racist (which is kind of related to Boy Crisis, which is kind of in turn related to MGMT, sort of.)
Local selections on the mix come courtesy of MillionYoung, Jacuzzi Boys, Panic Bomber, and Plains. The latter, maybe, isn't one you've heard yet, but you should. It's a sort of supergroup including John Hancock of ANR, Jorges Graupera of a bunch of bands like Guajiro and the Brand, and Jared McKay of the aquatic artist duo Coral Morphologic.
Tonight, too, support the little label and bands that could by checking out ANR and MillionYoung's tour homecoming show at Bar. Admission is free, but buy something from these guys if you can -- they recently had a bunch of stuff stolen in Montreal.
