See Crossfade's interview: "J. Nics on Miami Rap, The Tribute, and The Product: 'Southern Niggas Ain't Slow.'"
It's always great to see a hard-working local artist's
hustle blossom into much-deserved national attention, and that's definitely
what's happening right now with rapper J. Nics.
The Miami Gardens-raised MC adds another notch to his resume with SNAS: The Product, his most complete project to date, which dropped yesterday via DJBooth.net.
A follow-up to November's SNAS: The Tribute, which saw the 26-year-old MC rhyming over Southern rap classics from
Master P's "Ice Cream Man" to "From the South" by Z-Ro, The
Product features stellar, all-original production from Atlanta's SMKA, West Palm Beach's The Lottery, and Miami's own DJ Sharpsound, among others, plus cameos from ¡Mayday!, Phresh James, and Aleon Craft.
Nics has been on a mission to prove "Southern Niggas
Ain't Slow." (That's what SNAS stands for, in case you were wondering.) And he certainly make his case with Product tracks like "Last Day," a highly relatable cut about overcoming financial obstacles.
Perhaps more impressive than any one song, though, is the overall cohesiveness of the 11-track tape, which flows as smoothly as the Polar Bear Mack's husky voice and his producers' bottom-heavy, trunk-rattling beats.
J. Nics's SNAS: The Product release party. Tuesday, April 24. Bardot, 3456 N. Miami Ave., Miami. The show starts at 10 p.m. and tickets cost $5. Call 305-576-5570, or visit bardotmiami.com.
