Miami is no friend to underground clubs. They open. They flourish. They close.
So when we here at Crossfade wrote about The Nest for the club's grand opening during Winter Music Conference and Miami Music Week, we were hopeful, but we also suggested not getting used to the new pop-up.
"It's like a bird's nest," said Anders Scherberger, owner of The Nest. "It shows up, makes something, then leaves."
Originally, the idea was for the club to stay open about a month before shutting down. It would be the underground's stubborn, temporary response to the mainstream EDM daze that falls over Miami during WMC and MMW.
Months later, though, the club stands strong with no plans to move. Recently named New Times' Best Venue for Local Acts, The Nest has become something of a safe haven for Miami's steadily expanding art community.
"We had the option to stay open, and people really wanted us to keep it. There was a need for it," Scherberger tells Crossfade.
"We're going to be here for at least a year or so. A lot of places are closing down. All the lots around us are being sold and turned into condo areas, ours will probably go too. We're still looking for new places so we can purchase a location and be there permanently."
Located in downtown Miami, The Nest attempts to fill the void left by the closings of some of Miami's most beloved clubs. Word on the street says it's doing a pretty decent job.
"I just love music," said Scherberger, "I'm from Miami, and every summer I would have to leave and go to music festivals. There was never anything in Miami. I got tired of having to leave, I wanted to bring something different back."
