Brush up on those Cabbage Patch skills, and relive the days of bologna sandwiches and kickball -- we're going to Recess!

It is Blackbird Ordinary's Saturday daytime party, where you can "come out and play" and be a cool kid again.

"The grown folks' playground," says DJ Fly Guy, the man behind the bash.

Much like it was when you were a kid, Recess is all about "letting your worries and concerns go." But now, there's booze, babes, classic tunes, Jenga, and barbecue.

"To tie in the term Recess with the idea just plays to the whole theme of nostalgia," the DJ explains.

"You were in school for how many hours and when it was time for recess, your spirits were lifted and you got to play outdoors.

"It's kind of a similar concept. If you've had a rough week, you can now let loose."

Recess may be a new phenomenon at Blackbird, but the party has been going down in the Magic City for two years.

"I started the party at the rooftop of the Clevelander. There was no other daytime party in Miami that played old-school music, and all the top South Beach promoters would come to my party and hang out, and then go to their clubs."

Although the bash moved from the beach to Brickell, the music has remained unchanged.

"It's more than just old school hip-hop, it's basically any music that's considered classic from any genre -- '90s hip-hop to dance to '70s funk."

"Recess has always been DJ driven -- Tony Touch, pretty much all the big DJs in Miami, Affect, Griot, A-Train -- so many guys would come just to play because they knew at Recess, you can play the music you can't play at a regular club."

And since Miami is such a party-obsessed city, a five-hour afternoon bash like Recess fits the 305 scene like a snapback cap.

"There are not a lot of day parties on Saturdays, and Miami is a town that likes to party all the time," says Blackbird's Jessie Gilmartin.

"So Recess is basically a big cookout where you can come out in the afternoon, get your dance on, have a beer and chill. It flows really nicely into Saturday night."

Still, at the end of the day, Fly Guy's goal is just to make you feel like a kid again.

"I want everyone to leave feeling happy. And of course, I want them to come back."

Recess. With DJ Fly Guy and guest DJs. Saturday, November 2. Blackbird Ordinary, 729 SW 1st Ave., Miami. The party runs from 5-10 p.m. and admission is free. Visit blackbirdordinary.com or call 305-671-3307.
