Shocking news as publicist Kristen Foster confirms the death of R&B and pop legend Whitney Houston at the age of 48.

The singer, who catapulted instantly to super-stardom in 1985 with her self-titled debut, had struggled with sobriety and rumored drug problems. Still, her musical contributions were no less diminished with hit singles like "How Will I Know," "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," "It's Not Right But It's Okay," and, of course, her cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You."

TMZ reports that Houston's body was found unresponsive at the Beverly Hills Hotel. When paramedics arrived CPR was attempted unsuccessfully, and Houston was declared dead at 3:55 p.m.

Houston is survived by her 18-year-old daughter with Bobby Brown, Bobbi Kristina Houston.
