The archetypal preacher commands the pulpit like a mad scientist. He gesticulates wildly like a fascist dictator delivering his signature call-to-arms for an assembly of at-attention infantry. Spit collects in the corner of the holy man's mouth before launching forth like soot spewed from the barrel of a canon. His words, eyes, and face are redder than Hell.
But then there's The Church of Chill, an informal congregation of psychedelically inclined post-punk collaborators led by Lake Worth power trio Cop City/Chill Pillars. This church preaches, practices, and promotes a relaxed musical alternative to the typical spiritual frenzy.
For a look at The Church's services, let's turn to an evening vigil hosted last summer while the Pillars were touring the East Coast. The hymn is "Look Around" from the band's debut LP on Florida's Dying, Held Hostage on Planet Chill. And the style is pure chill, characterized by deeply stoned psych breakdowns followed by extra-fried surf riffage.
The Pillars play mind jams. The Pillars play party jams. Often, it's the same jam.
