Yet Another Reason to Love Sugar

Any drinker worth her salt and lime is well versed in the top five standard liquors -- that’d be rum, vodka, gin, whiskey, and tequila. But maybe you’re bored of the status quo. Maybe your alcoholic taste buds are crying out for something potent and new. You need look no further than the latest popular imports from South America. For Brazilians, cachaça has been a delicious, refreshing, and potent addition to the usual liquor cabinet selections. And thanks to the increased profile of the caipirinha, the elixir made from fresh-squeezed sugar cane is gaining popularity in local markets.

The man behind local events such as the Redland Riot tour and the Great Gables Pub Crawl, Robert Burr, is psyched to feature cachaças from Brazil as this month’s tipple in the spotlight at his monthly Gifted Rums tastings. “Like Brazilian culture, it's youthful, it's sexy, it's fun, and it's exotic,” says the convivial host. Tonight from 7:00 to 8:30, you can sample cachaças by Leblon, Cuca Fresca, Agua Luca, Moleca, and Oronoco rum. Gifted Rums events take place the second Tuesday of each month in the Aragon Room of the Westin Colonnade Hotel.
