The Best Things to Do in Miami This Weekend

We're about two weeks into the new year, and though your workout routine might have changed, some things have stayed the same. Queer party Gender Blender returns to Las Rosas this Sunday with wild fashion and drag performances, and Boxelder Craft Beer Market will keep the suds flowing at Juicy, an all-day festival celebrating IPA and fruited sour brews this Saturday. Like Doublemint gum, Miami City Ballet is set to bring double the fun. Dances at a Gathering boasts two 20th-century masterpieces from two mastermind choreographers: Jerome Robbins and Twyla Tharp. The first piece — Dances at a Gathering — zooms in on the athleticism, grace, and beauty of dance in its purest form, showcasing ten dancers and live Chopin tunes. Though some of your favorite late-'90s and early-'00s bands no longer exist (ahem, Yellowcard and Motion City Soundtrack), Take This to Your Grave is trying to keep the spirit alive. The cover band regularly performs hits from the likes of New Found Glory, My Chemical Romance, and Fall Out Boy and seemingly everything emotional and angsty in between. A trippy, psychological production based on the 2016 film Ann has hit the theater stage. The mind-twisting production follows the story of Ruben, an artist who leaves his tormented life and takes shelter in his own imagination. He distances himself from everything, including his wife Ann, who tries to understand his newfound world. Miami was quite rebellious during Prohibition. The city was home to speakeasies and rum havens both on- and offshore. Now you can learn all about that boozy era and sip cocktails made from vintage recipes. Did you sleep on tickets to New Order's Saturday-night concert at the Fillmore? They've been sold out for weeks, but you can still make it to the next-best thing. True Faith: A New Order After Party will go down at the Anderson for those who want to keep the party going as well as those who didn't get to LiveNation quickly enough. If you've ever wanted to take your dog to the movies, here's a chance. Bark-Off 2019 at the New World Center will show top flicks from the 2018 Canine Film Festival as well as previews of coming attractions at this year's fest (happening in July in Coconut Grove). Some of Miami's best local ice-cream shops will unite for Bal Harbour Shops' second-annual Ice Cream We Love, a frozen-treats fest benefiting UM/Jackson Memorial's Holtz Children's Hospital. The event will transform the mall's first and second levels into a real-life Candyland, where you'll find everything from Italian ice and gelato to paletas and nitrogen ice cream. More than 20 vendors are expected to set up mini pop-ups, so keep an eye out for Amazonica, Bianco Gelato, Cielito Artisan Pops, Dasher & Crank, and others. The festival will offer a variety of unique flavors, though specifics have not been released. A sneak peek, however, reveals Dasher & Crank's popular picks, including ubemacapuno and strawberry cream cheese with guava jelly. This Sunday's edition will include performances by South Florida queer artists such as Jackie Jae and King Femme. The Drew Carey-hosted improv show Whose Line Is It Anyway? was superpopular back in the day, and now there's a version of it on the CW. Well, Carey and a few of his pals are back and touring with a similar concept, Whose Live Anyway? Just like the TV series, this show boasts 90 minutes of pure improv joy and a ton of audience interaction. Slated to appear with Carey in Fort Lauderdale are Joel Murray, Jeff B. Central Park has made music history many times over. It's home to the Strawberry Fields John Lennon memorial. It was the setting for an historic Diana Ross concert in 1983. And in the fall of 1981, Simon & Garfunkel reunited at the park to play and record a beloved benefit concert.
