Skateboarding is not a crime — not even in Cuba. In fact, it’s encouraged by Amigo Skate Cuba, a Miami-based non-profit whose mission is to enhance the lives of skaters, artists, and musicians living in Havana.

“Last year we went to Cuba three times,” says Amigo Skate founder Rene Lecour. “What we do is take skateboarding equipment and art supplies to kids living in Havana.”

The organization has also hooked Cuban kids up with Fender guitars and other musical equipment in years past. But decks, trucks, bearings, art supplies, and amplifiers don’t come cheap. That’s why Lecour and crew are hosting the 2nd Annual Skateboard Rodeo this weekend, from Friday to Dec. 18 at Westwind Lakes Park, benefiting Amigo Skate Cuba and other non-profits.

“It is a three-day skateboarding event,” Lecour says. “And each day we’re partnering with a non-profit. Friday’s event is for Miami Remembers Betty — a local breast cancer awareness group. Saturday is for Fight the Hunger Foundation — they’re building a home for runaway teens. And the third day, Sunday, is for Amigos skate Cuba.”
