Lately, it seems that scary movies want to do more than just make audiences jump in their seats or squeal when something pops out unexpectedly. The studios want to make the scares from silver screens into real life terrors.
When The Purge Anarchy was released last summer, we tried our hand at going through a purge-inspired experience set up inside over-sized trucks. (And if you don’t recall, it was harder than it looked.) Now, with Insidious: Chapter 3 opening in theaters this summer, Blumhouse is taking a creepy Insidious-themed truck around the United States to give fans a taste of where Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) resides: the Further.
Stop one on the six-city tour is our very own Wynwood. Two heavy-duty trucks have been fused together with the logo for the thriller slapped onto each side with the entrance set up to look like the porch of a cozy home. But once through the doors, that warm-and-fuzzy feeling completely disappears as you enter into a dark hall heavily saturated with ominous decor.
After patiently waiting your turn — and getting your adrenaline pumping in the meantime — it’s time to walk down the hall and find a white door that will lead you into a totally dark, cramped room. Here’s a tip: the door will be on your left, if you keep walking straight down the hall and push the door at the end, you’ll end up outside. This New Times writer totally did not walk through the wrong door and interrupt a technician working (but if we did, we did it for you, reader, we did it for you).
Standing in the middle of a pitch-black room inside a truck you know is triggered to have something pop out at you at any moment is the furthest thing from fun. So when a door slowly creeks open and ghoulish girl dressed all in white beckons, you walk towards her because you have no choice.
Now comes the best part: the oculus rift that will visually transport you into the other realm known as the Further. Remember to look all around you — you don’t want to miss any of the ghosts.
The most frightening part of the entire experience was the waiting in dark rooms and the anticipation leading up to the oculus rift. But once it’s all said and done, you can look back on it with a hearty laugh — especially when looking at the picturesque photo that was snapped during your experience — and feel mentally prepared for real the Further when Insidious: Chapter 3 opens in theaters.
The Insidious: Chapter 3 Into the Further 4D Experience will be at the parking lot at Mana Wynwood until Sunday. (Friday and Saturday 3 to 11 p.m., and Sunday noon to 8 p.m.) To purchase tickets for your experience, visit intothefurther.eventbrite.com. Insidious: Chapter 3 hits theaters June 5.
