We all know most productions about womens' prisons staged in Miami tend to err on the sexier side, to say the least. So it's no surprise that when the legendary Broadway show Chicago stages its run at the end of May at the Arsht Center, a bombshell will be filling the otherwise dowdy role of Matron "Mama" Morton. Sofia Vergara, the Latin American pin-up, will be filing the role previously played on stage and screen by Queen Latifah, Kelly Osbourne, and Jennifer Holiday. Reinventing the role it seems.
Vergara will actually make her debut on Broadway for a month, then fly in for the Miami run May 26 to 31, and return to Broadway for a final week. Cheap casting stunts in musicals: They're not just for Broadway runs anymore! Attached above is Latifah's Academy Award nominated performance of Morton's signature song. You be the judge of whether or not Vergara will be able to pull it off.
