Trying to find the right balance between school and extracurricular activity is tough. But when you are constantly fighting The Man, who thinks skateboarding is a crime, it can be downright discouraging. Tony Hawk has proven repeatedly that dreams of success and riches can come true for a plucky skater who stays in school. (Hawk would not have posed for an American Library Association “Read” poster if he thought otherwise.) So grab your books and board, and do some geometry between Ollies at the On a Roll after-school program at M.I.A. Skatepark. “I know that when I was in school, it was an ongoing challenge to balance out my study time with my skating,” M.I.A.’s executive partner Matt Cantor expresses in an e-mail. “I think that providing a setting where we’re all working our studies together will make a big difference.” A tutor and computer access will be provided to help with the dreaded but necessary homework. Admission to the study program is included in the regular session price of ten dollars. Call 305-599-2172, or visit www.miaskatepark.com.
