Showcase of Rhythms

FRI 7/8

Tomorrow marks the 189th anniversary of Argentina's independence from Spain, so instead of fireworks, how about a bit of tango to spark a fiery fiesta? Join Oscar Caballero, Roxana Garber, and the Tango Times Dance Company in celebrating Argentina's freedom at tonight's "Caminos a Mi Tierra" (Roads to My Homeland). The event will mix several musical elements to exhibit the nation's artistic history and talent. Live musicians will play while dancers perform Argentine folk dances and, of course, do the tango. The show begins at 8:30 at Teatro de Bellas Artes, 2173 SW Eighth St., Miami. Tickets cost $20. Call 305-266-3029, or visit www.tangotimes.us. -- Karen R. Figueiredo

Journey to Narnia

C.S. Lewis's fantasy enacted

SAT 7/9

C.S. Lewis said the ideas for his fantasy world, Narnia, came to him in dreamlike images: a queen on a sleigh, a faun with an umbrella, and a glorious lion. Lewis released the first chronicle in 1950, and many of his peers, including the author of The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien, criticized Lewis's books for being too outlandish. Now generations of children have grown up enjoying the adventures of the four Pevensie siblings: Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy. A grandiose Disney production is scheduled to hit the silver screen this Christmas. But before your little ones see the film, let them read the book, and take them to the delightful stage production at Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre (280 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables). See Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe today at 2:00. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for children. Call 305-444-9293, or visit www.actorsplayhouse.org. --Patrice Elizabeth Grell Yursik

Just One of the Guys

FRI 7/8

The title of this play whisks theater fans right to the premise. It's a show about guys. Hispanic guys. Gay Hispanic guys. But theatergoers need not share any specific pedigree to enjoy Men on the Verge of a His-Panic Breakdown, according to Jim Tommaney, who directs the EDGE/Theatre production. The array of skits are powerfully witty, textured, and feature the universal underdog-striving-to-break-free theme, he explains. The presentation, with minimal sets, is quite lively, Tommaney says, featuring an assortment of stories about immigrants set in different states. Actors portraying the various characters take the stage individually, interacting and dialoguing with invisible characters. The show opens tonight at 8:00 and runs through July 31 at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, 2000 Convention Center Dr., Miami Beach. Tickets cost $20, $15 for students and seniors, and $10 for members. Call 786-355-0976, or visit www.mbgarden.org. -- Patti Roth
