You can't say that playwright and New Theatre artistic director Ricky J. Martinez avoids deep themes in his work. In Road Through Heaven, his latest effort, he explores morality, life and death, and the realization of our deepest desires in the context of a lyrical love triangle on a forgotten Caribbean island. After six separate readings, Road Through Heaven is finally ready for prime time, with a talented team on- and offstage to help realize this dreamlike, supernatural play: Martinez himself stars alongside New Theatre veterans Evelyn Perez and Javier Cabrera. Recent Carbonell Award winner Margaret Ledford directs the production, her first for New Theatre. She says, "Road Through Heaven challenges the audience to examine whether or not you can truly love two people simultaneously, equally, and completely with your one heart. It also contains some otherworldly elements that illustrate how there can be larger forces at work in your life other than your own choices and actions. Through my direction, I hope that Ricky's beautiful story is told as hauntingly and as touchingly as he wrote it."
