The International Hispanic Theatre Festival has been paying tribute to Hispanic theater and stage legends from countries such as Chile, Colombia, and Mexico for the past 27 years. But this year, Mario Ernesto Sanchez and Teatro Avante are bringing the best of Latino stage from our own back yard, with plays and productions from the U.S. of A. The fest will present plays from L.A.-based theater group Urban Theatre Movement, which will perform Miguel Piñero’s Short Eyes, kicking off the festival Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami). The IHTF will also showcase plays from Argentina, Mexico City, and New York. And, as it does every year, the fest will feature a free International Children’s Day, scheduled for Sunday, July 22, with bilingual programs and performances. The festival will also bestow its lifetime performing arts achievement award on Teresa María Rojas, the founder of festival academic partner Prometeo Theatre of Miami Dade College and mentor to Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz. The 2012 edition of IHTF promises to deliver the best of Miami’s Hispanic arts, culture, and theater goodness, and remains one of the prominent festivals preserving Latino arts while delivering some moving and thought-provoking productions. Shows are performed in Spanish with English subtitles.
