SAT 12/4

No one appreciates the work of creative types as much as other creative types. That's why Lindsay Bell and Juan Navarro created Underground Cavalcade as "an eclectic event designed by artists and musicians for the benefit and entertainment of artists and musicians." The second Cavalcade combines the visual and the aural by converting Churchill's Pub (5501 NE Second Ave.) into a theater for the screening of film and video by locals including Juan Janzen, Edgar Flores, and the TM Sisters. After the projections, a number of musical acts (Life In The So Called Space Age, Such Radiant Fiction, and A Particularly Vicious Rumor among them) will take the stage for experimental, noisecore, ambient, and art-rock performances. This sequel will add a 1400-square-foot "gallery" with booths featuring handmade drawings, jewelry, zines, and shirts. In the DIY spirit of punk and other cultural revolutions, all artists are invited to display their creations. And you aren't required to be a creative type to partake. A $4 donation will get you into the 9:00 p.m. gathering. Call 305-757-1807 or visit www.churchillspub.com. -- Greg Baker

Handmade Tales

THU 12/2

The Gilded Hand is the kind of store you could lose yourself in for hours, if you're not a careful shopper armed with a list and a purpose. The shelves are cluttered with whimsical bric-a-brac: jewelry, kitchen gadgets, even Christmas tree ornaments, all reinvented as remarkable objets d'art. The next three days will be busy at this funky boutique. Tonight at 6:30, the Hand will hold a reception for Sonia Jacobson's pueblo-inspired semiprecious jewelry collection. Friday night at 7:00, enjoy Jessica York Hockman's striking oil and acrylic paintings. Then, on Saturday afternoon at 1:00, Those Girls Designs will hold a trunk show of their soft, fuzzy, unique, hand-woven blankets at the shop, 165 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. Luck be a lady at the Biltmore

THU 12/2

Ante up, baby. It's time to go all in as the first Grand Slam Casino, benefiting the Mike Lowell Foundation, gives us a good reason to gamble. Unlike Pete Rose, participants can still make it to the Hall of Fame no matter how much they risk. So, lose and lose big, because the proceeds from this event will go to The League Against Cancer. Try your luck at roulette, blackjack, or craps and practice reading those tells. Not a gambler? Be dazzled by the Vegas showgirls, listen to live music, and sneak in some bids on the silent auction. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will also be served tonight from 7:00 to midnight at The Biltmore Hotel's Country Club Ballroom, 1200 Anastasia Ave., Coral Gables. Tickets cost $150. Call 305-662-7152 or visit www.mikelowellfoundation.com. -- Kris Conesa
