On March 20, Turner Classic Movies will bring its newly restored version of the 1960 film Elmer Gantry to the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts – for free. In an event that surely stirred memories of first glances at fifth grade required reading lists, TCM started its third annual Road to Hollywood Tour on March 1 in New York City, when it unveiled the newly restored classic To Kill a Mockingbird. The ten-city free movie tour will end with the “re-mier” (Get it? Like premier again?) of the 1955 film Marty in Portland, Oregon. Special guest Shirley Jones will make an appearance for the Miami screening. The actress won an academy award for her role as a vengeful prostitute in Elmer Gantry, a film about a con man and a female evangelist who get rich selling religion to small town America. Other stars of the film, which is based on the 1927 novel by Sinclair Lewis, are Burt Lancaster and Jean Simmons. TCM daytime host Ben Mankiewicz will host the screening. Elmer Gantry starts at 7:30 p.m. For free tickets, visit tcm.com/roadtohollywood.
