Olivia Munn Says Miami-Filmed Ride Along 2 Is Even Funnier Than the First

Seated in the center of a long couch in a meeting room at the Mandarin Oriental, Olivia Munn leans back and lets her body fall into the plush cushion. She looks relaxed and comfortable — two things actors rarely appear after a long day of press. Wearing a formfitting blood-orange dress with a dark-blue blazer, Munn speaks casually about her latest movie, Ride Along 2.

Costarring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, the sequel to the 2014 comedy brings the crime-solving duo to Miami (where it was also filmed), and instead of chilling at the beach, they get entangled in a case.

Munn plays a Miami detective with an I-don't-need-a-partner mentality. When James (Ice Cube) and Ben (Kevin Hart) meet Maya for the first time, "she has just finished being chastised by her boss, and they're sitting at her desk and she's just not having it," Munn explains while taking a sip of iced tea. "But when she finds out that they need each other, she begrudgingly teams up with them."

The actress finished filming more than a year and a half ago, and at the time of her interview with New Times, she had yet to see the final cut. "From what I'm hearing, it's even funnier than the first one," she says, adding how it's hard not to be.

"Especially with Cube and Kevin, it was so funny the first time because of their dynamic, and of course it's going to get funnier the second time around as they get more comfortable playing those characters."

The comedic chemistry that transcends the screen and reaches the audience also affected Munn on set. "Kevin makes me laugh all of the time," she says while closing her eyes and shaking her head. "Any scene where the audience is supposed to laugh, I guarantee that I probably ruined like nine out of ten takes laughing when we were shooting it."

It's clear from the way she speaks of her costars that Munn enjoyed filming with Hart and Ice Cube. "We all have fun together," she says affectionately.

The promise of a good time on set was among the deciding factors for Munn to join the cast. "I was finishing the last season of The Newsroom, and I was figuring out the next thing I was going to do, and then this came up. I love Kevin and Cube and am a big fan of Tim Story, but I wasn't sure if it would fit into my schedule."

Then she met Hart.

"It instantly felt like he was my brother, like he instantly feels like family. I would love to think that that's just my connection with him, but I see him with everybody and he's just that nice and that funny," she laughs.

On the topic of families and brothers, Munn says that while filming for the forthcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, she hung out with the family of a famous Miamian, Oscar Isaac. Smiling wide and tilting her head back, she says, "I love that guy! It's funny because he has that very laid-back energy, and I feel that's how Miami is — just laid-back and really easygoing."
