If financial crises and layoffs have you down, what better diversion than a film about financial crises and layoffs, right? Everyone knows that money meltdowns are way more palatable when A-list actors at the center of drama. Get your fill of headline-based fantasy — brought to you by a star-studded cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, and Stanley Tucci — in J.C. Chandor’s Margin Call. The film is set in 2008, on the eve of the recent financial collapse. Quinto plays Peter Sullivan, an entry-level financial analyst at a giant investment firm. He stumbles upon some numbers that, once crunched, clearly spell doom for the firm, foretelling the inevitable and complete devaluation of its assets. John Tuld (Irons), the charismatic CEO, is rushed in to resurrect the all but sunken ship, regardless of the impending casualties. Margin Call tracks the panicked reactions from company bigwigs, including the sarcastic executive Sam Rogers (Spacey) and the bitterly stifled female chief risk officer (Moore), in this roller-coaster ride of morals and finances.
