The Miami Contemporary Dance Company’s latest performance is a study in artistic contrasts. This weekend at the Colony Theater MCDC will present the world premiere of Love Without Permission and an encore presentation of La Muerte de Garcia Lorca. One beautifully choreographed performance celebrates love, the other, death. “The first is white and pastel, a celebration,” says artistic director Ray Sullivan, “The second is dramatic, passionate, and riveting.” Sullivan’s vision of Love is neither social or political. “We’re celebrating those that were together when it was difficult,” the respected choreographer explains. La Muerte opens with a flamenco dancer in a white communion dress dancing on top of a coffin, so as to wake up the dead. The piece is a tribute to Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca, who was executed and thrown into an unmarked grave. “It’s giving an exaltation of the funeral he never had,” Sullivan says.
