Mango A-Go-Go

Nothing says Miami in July like the cloyingly sweet scent of mangoes split open and sizzling like pancakes on hot pavement. It’s high season for these sunset-hued fruits, but there’s more to the Magic City’s unofficial edible than the sticky mess in your driveway. And the famous International Mango Festival at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (10901 Old Cutler Rd., Coral Gables) is the place to become an expert in the hundreds of varieties that grow globally. This year’s three-day extravaganza honors the mangoes of Colombia in particular. Stroll the “Mangos of the World” display and taste-test some succulent samples for $1 (plus vote for your faves), drink a mango smoothie at Mangoville marketplace, bid on rare fruits at Sunday’s auction, learn from expert lecturers, check out all kinds of cooking demos, buy trees for your backyard, and even take a yoga class. After an entire day devoted to all things mango, you’ll head home with a bounty of new ideas on how to use the ripe beauties your neighbors, co-workers, and random strangers keep gifting you. So. Many. Mangoes.
