Attention, Miami singles: This Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be such a downer. You may have wined and dined your way through the worst of South Florida’s dating pool to no avail, but there’s still a chance for you to find true love. There’s just one catch: Your soulmate isn’t a person. It’s a piece of art. MDC Museum of Art + Design (600 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) wants you to have the meaningful relationship you’ve always wanted, even if it’s with an inanimate cultural masterpiece rather than Mr. or Ms. Right. So the museum is launching the fundraiser Paper Hearts just in time for Valentine’s Day. “The whole idea behind the event started with a vintage Valentine card and transpired from there,” Jeremy Mikolajczak, the museum’s executive director, explains. “It was amazing how cheeky vintage cards are and that they did not necessarily allude to romance only, but friendship as well.” So they’ve set the stage for Paper Hearts attendees to make new friends (with or without benefits). DJ Hottpants is curating a “romantic” DJ set, Afrobeta will perform, and red lighting, chocolates, and other accoutrements will help set the mood. A special exhibition of works on paper, featuring many of Miami’s top artists, was curated for the occasion by local art legend Bernice Steinbaum. All the works will be up for sale or auction. Paper Hearts takes place Thursday from 8 to 11 p.m. Tickets cost $75 for general admission, which includes unlimited hors d’oeuvres and cocktails from local restaurants and bars, or $200 for VIP admission, which adds bonuses such as access to a VIP lounge, special hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, a gift bag, and a silent auction preview.
