In 1983, South Carolina lesbian writer Dorothy Allison made her literary debut with The Women Who Hate Me. Full of free-verse poetic benders, the chapbook set the thematic territory rural white poverty, sexual violence, gender politics, etc. that Allison would return to again and again in later work, including her Lambda-winning 1988 short story collection, Trash, and National Book Award-nominated novel, Bastard Out of Carolina.
Beginning this Wednesday and running through May 8, the Florida Center for the Literary Arts presents the Writers Institute, its annual series of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry workshops. Unfortunately, Allison's four-day narrative class, "Story Intensive," is already sold-out. But this Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., she will give a free public reading at Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus, alongside memoirist Connie May Fowler. Other 2010 Writers Institute authors include keynote speaker Chenjerai Hove, graphic novelist Mark Siegel, and nonfiction writer Rick Bragg
