The III Points Festival aims to deliver a fully immersive experience in all things technology, music, and art. Sure, most people will attend the fest and pay the big bucks to see the bands and DJs, but we don't want you to miss out on all the visual stimulation -- especially because most of it's free.
Here are ten artists you don't want to miss.
10. Ana Mendez
Performing with her body, Ana Mendez makes her movements her art form. She collaborates with musicians and visual artists to create dance performances based on native rituals and traditions, so her final outcome always has the intention of creating a sacred space. As one of the artists scheduled to attend the festival, it'll be interesting to see how Mendez blends technology into her act and which musician she pairs up with.
9. Jason Peterman with AV-8 Projects
Peterman's installation will incorporate 3D mapping technology in order to add movement and animation to ordinary objects, with the final product being a psychedelic 3D video. This video installation will be located by the main stage near the Wynwood Cigar Factory. Check out the video above, in which Peterman did the 3D mapping and technology for artist Natasha Tsakos.
8. Jillian Mayer
New Times MasterMind winner Mayer is a resident artist at David Castillo Gallery (same home as the TM Sisters), and she is also a featured artist at the III Points Festival. You might remember her video from this year's Optic Nerve festival, How to Hide From Cameras, in which she gives viewers a makeup tutorial on how not to be detected by surveillance cameras. III Points is staying quiet when it comes to what Mayer will contribute this weekend, but whether it's an art installation or digital video screening, she's one artist to keep your eyes on.
7. Guillermo Casanova
During the festival, GAB Studio will be transformed into an old-school video game lounge. Yes, there will be old video games, and yes, you'll be allowed to play with them. Music will be spun by DJs throughout the night, too. But don't let that distract you from the work of Guillermo Casanova. Casanova's work blends the surreal with the real, and he is also known for performing live visuals for various bands. So you're not going to want to miss his digital art installation, which runs throughout the weekend.
6. Allison Schulnik
Allison Schulnik will screen her most recent work at the festival, followed by a musical set by Austin Paul. Schulnik creatively blends film with sculpted art and painted scenes in order to create a visual spectacle that will leave you wanting more. The images in Mound (2011) might appear strange at first, but you can't help but form a connection with the moving clay creatures and feel their complex emotions. Schulnik's work will screen at Miami Light Project this Saturday, October 5, from 5 to 6 p.m. in a free show.
5. John Sevigny
Known for his powerful images, photographer John Sevigny will have his first Miami solo-show ever at the III Points fest. The exhibit, titled "Wilderness of Mirrors," will feature Sevigny's photography which, though it's not comprised of images of people, is intended to act as a mirror that inspires viewers to look harshly at their own lives. You might want to have a drink first. The event takes place at Imagesound this Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; it's free and drinks and light fare will be provided.
4. Ahol
Miami street artist Ahol, aka Aholsniffsglue, is one visual spectacle you don't want to miss. Ahol is known for his artwork on both public walls and hanging in galleries, so you'll most likely catch his III Points artwork during the Wynwood Walls Tour happening all day Saturday, October 6. Be on the look out for tiny, trippy looking monsters - he likes those.
3. Strangeways
Okay, so Strangeways is a zine rather than a singular artist. But the best thing about the zine is the way it incorporates various artistic mediums into one neatly bound magazine. Launching their Strangeways Zine: III Points edition this weekend, the masterminds behind the underground magazine will be there to celebrate and give out the latest issue. The launch party takes place at TwinHaus Headquarters (2600 N Miami Ave., Miami) this Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free with RSVP to [email protected].
2. TM Sisters
These sisters are known for their visually striking artwork and incorporating themselves into their exhibits. Sponsored by Samsung, their theme for the festival centers on otherworldly galaxies; using tablet screens they will transport you into another realm. Their takeover of Hangar Gallery this Friday and Saturday is sure to be one of epic proportions and out-of-this-world visuals. Plus, there'll be shiny things to look at.
1. David Lynch
It's the David Lynch -- the dude who brought the world Twin Peaks. No, he won't be making any personal appearances in Wynwood, but on Saturday, from 2-4:30 p.m., Lynch's latest documentary film, Meditation, Creativity, Peace will screen, previewed by some curated films from Borscht at the Light Box at Goldman Warehouse this Saturday starting at 2 p.m. The film follows Lynch on a tour of Europe as he spreads the word about Transcendental Meditation. You might even leave the screening feeling your spirit uplifted, and your visual senses pleased. Admission is free with RSVP to [email protected].
