Adriana de Moura and her Real Housewives of Miami co-star Joanna Krupa are dueling brides this season. But over-the-top weddings aren't the only interest the two share -- and the bride war battlefield isn't the only arena in which they're competing for attention.
Krupa is a longtime supporter of animal rights activist group PETA, posing topless in, um, unorthodox attire to rally against wearing fur. And now de Moura's joined the fight, getting naked for PETA's cameras to protest Miami Seaquarium's treatment of its whale Lolita. "I grew up outside, in the water, and I have always loved animals," de Moura told us in a post-photo shoot interview. "It just made sense."
The PETA ad, on the other hand? Not so much.
"Could you live in a bathtub for 40 years?" the ad asks, comparing Lolita's tank to the cramped quarters in which de Moura sits, staring out seductively. How cramped is she? Hell, she couldn't even fit her left leg inside the tub. How inhumane.
De Moura's come-hither pout seems to imply that the bathtub might not be such a bad place to spend your time, especially if you're into attractive, naked women. Girl has a bangin' body -- she's even worked that booty at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim. Is this is really the message PETA's trying to send about how Lolita's living at the Seaquarium?
Of course not. The ad copy explains:
Lolita has been stuck in a tiny tank at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970, when she was torn away from her ocean family. She is a lone orca surrounded by concrete and chemically treated water, and the Seaquarium refuses to release her to a coastal sanctuary. Help free her by taking action at PETA .org.
In a statement, the Seaquarium refuted PETA's claims, saying, "Moving Lolita in any way, whether to a new pool, a sea pen, or to the open waters of the Pacific Northwest, would be an experiment. And it is a risk with her life that we are not willing to take. There is no scientific evidence that the 48-year-old post-reproductive Lolita could survive if she was returned to the ocean. It would be irresponsible, reckless, and cruel to treat her life as an experiment and jeopardize her health and safety in order to appease a group of activists."
The Seaquarium also claims, "PETA's latest 'celebrity in the nude' photo is simply the latest attempt by this organization to generate free publicity and media attention. These sensational and exploitive publicity stunts do nothing to further the cause for animal welfare."
It's not exactly helping the cause of feminism, either. But it'll probably create more drama on an upcoming episode of Real Housewives. Savvy timing, that.
