Hello, Birdie

Emily Book returns to her hometown ten years after a tragic school bus accident took the lives of her entire second-grade class and left her the lone survivor. Now, preparing to spend her senior year attending the town’s high school, she must come to grips with being not only the awkward outsider but also a constant walking reminder of the dreadful events a decade ago. Emily is bullied, mistreated, and cast out. But she is also hiding a secret: She has supernatural powers. Created by the House Theatre of Chicago, The Sparrow is a sci-fi musical play making its South Florida debut this week at the Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theater. It’s the tale of a teenage girl trying desperately to fit in while constantly being shadowed by a devastating and life-changing event. And although her special powers are a secret to everyone in her small, rural town, there are other furtive mysteries Emily might be hiding as well. It’s like X-Men meets Carrie and Mean Girls — only with choreographed dancing.
Thursdays-Sundays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: April 7. Continues through May 1, 2011
