Miami’s Royal Poinciana Festival has been chugging along for 70 years now, earning the enviable title of Miami’s oldest continuously running festival. During that time, the essence of the celebration has remained largely unchanged. Every year a gathering of flower lovers convenes to celebrate the Madagascar native that has been adopted as our city’s official flowering tree -- by enjoying refreshments, discussions, art, and music.

The event kicks off this morning at the Kampong . The verdant location was the former home of noted botanist David Fairchild, and the grounds are home to some of Miami’s oldest specimens. Sit under the fire-red blossoms and bring a picnic lunch; then stroll around the grounds and check out the vintage car display courtesy of the Sun Coast chapter of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America. The afternoon offers a trolley tour of Coral Gables’ and Coconut Grove’s mightiest and most dazzling royal poinciana trees. The tour costs $20, and reservations are essential.
