Girls, Skates, and Scrapes

Girls on roller skates. Doesn't that sound sweet? Add elbow pads, kneepads, helmets, fishnet stockings, and a couple of bruises for good measure, and you've got the baddest new sport in Miami: roller derby. Miami's Vice City Rollers (MVCR) are a force to be reckoned with. In its inaugural season, the 305's one and only all-female flat-track roller derby team has been blocking and lapping opposing teams like mad. This Saturday, watch these riot grrls on wheels take on the Tampa Bay Derby Darlins at Suniland Roller Hockey Rink (9300 SW 152nd St., Miami) for their third and final home bout of the 2012 season. DJ Nancy Starr will provide the tunes. Grab a spot on the bleachers, or if you're really up for it, bring a folding chair and sit in the aptly named "suicide seating section," where you'll be at the center of the action. Wearing your own protective gear is probably a wise idea. The elbow-banging begins at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $10 presale and $12 at the door; suicide seating costs $15, and admission for kids is $5.
