Support the independent voice of Miami and help keep the future of New Times free.
Mariah Foxs dreams must sound like a Rastafarian drum circle or a Jamaican dancehall circa 1978. The esteemed illustrator and artist creates multimedia works inspired by drowsy fantasies and pop culture legends. Jim Morrison, Andy Warhol, and Jean Michel Basquiat all are paid tribute in i am i, her multimedia exhibit that opens today. But some of her most powerful artwork pays homage to Bob Marley, a musical icon with which Fox has a close connection. Ive worked with his family to keep his legacy alive, says Fox, who grew up in Jamaica. In addition to collaborating with Marleys daughter Cedella on childrens books (visit www.tuffgongbooks.com), Fox has created layered images and shadowboxes that incorporate still photographs, acrylic paint, wood, light, and found objects to offer a window into her vision. Discover the internal world of Mariah Fox at her MFA exhibit tonight.

Keep Miami New Times Free... Since we started Miami New Times, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Miami, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Miami with no paywalls.
