First of the Season

Wynwood’s first art crawl of 2007 busts out tonight with a squall at Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts, featuring Vicenta Casañ’s “miami:tropicaldepression” and Erica Magrey’s “Troubadour.” Casañ continues her manipulation of the Magic City’s skyline, obliterating familiar landmarks to create a sense of melancholy and unease. Her new series of photographs bleeds through with unnatural color, exaggerated cloud formations, and turbulent water to depict barren yet eerily familiar scenes of the calm before a storm or its devastating aftereffects. Magrey’s video unfolds the tale of a fictitious, gloomy glam rocker named Metalmags and her psychedelic journey through an alien world as she tries to wend her way to reality with the aid of a self-help tape.

At Jakmel Art Gallery and Cultural Center, Jude Papaloko presents “The Beauty Amidst a Place,” a photographic group show celebrating life in Israel and Lebanon. The exhibit cracks a window onto the culture and richness of a region most people associate with conflict. Beginning tonight at 7:00, the exhibit will feature live music and a performance by Elizabeth Ayoub. Call 786-312-5997, or visit www.judepapaloko.com.
