Rum. The mere utterance of the word conjures images of salty pirates in search of some booty. Rum is a spirit that has been around for ages and will outlive us all, so it seems fitting it should be honored with a fest — a renaissance-style fest, no less. At the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival, enthusiasts can gather and discuss all facets of the strong elixir. The fest features lectures, rum tastings, and onsite vendors selling “cool island fashions, arts and crafts, tiki collectibles, home furnishings, and more.” As the event organizers put it: “Rum is experiencing a renaissance of appreciation,” so appreciate rum this weekend at the DoubleTree by Hilton at the Miami Airport Convention Center (711 NW 72nd Ave., Miami). For professional booty-hunters, the Trade Only Grand Tasting begins Friday at 3 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, VIPs can get their tasting on starting at noon, and the general public gets their share beginning at 4 p.m. Tickets start at $50 for one-day entrance and $150 for three-day VIP admission. And yes, it’s perfectly acceptable to dress like a pirate. Call 305-443-7973 or visit rumrenaissance.com.
