He's big, he's bad, and he's one of South Florida's very own. Ira Sullivan has been playing his critically acclaimed jazz for nearly six decades and his band Ira Sullivan's Inter/Outer Continental Quintet will share a bit of its post-bop vibe at 8:00 p.m. during the Jazz at MoCA concert series. Not only does Sullivan have killer chops on the tenor saxophone, he plays with equal virtuosity on the trumpet, flugelhorn, peckhorn, flute, and drums. And who knows, the one-time Jazz Messenger may have added to that list since we last heard him. The venue being the Museum of Contemporary Art (770 NE 125th St., North Miami), there's sure to be something interesting hanging on the walls as well. Current exhibitions include "Frankenthaler: Painting on Paper (1949-2002)"; Trenton Doyle Hancock's "It Came From Studio Floor"; and Pablo Cano's "For Heaven's Sake." Fly (and Other) Guys
When Argentine pop-rock band La Mosca (above) and Venezuelan ska-reggae outfit Desorden Publico hit La Covacha's (10730 NW 25th St.) stage at 9:00 p.m., you'll get two big combos for the price of one. The octet Desorden Publico will promote its latest release, Diablo. According to singer Horacio Blanco, the devilish side of Desorden alludes to human nature and rebellion. La Mosca's eleven members are already breaking rules with new album Tango Latino, where singer Guillermo Novelli not only loses his trademark fly-shaped sunglasses, but the band also covers a classic tango number called "Los Mareados." Swede On It
Everyone loves an ABBA song
Mamma mia! The world still can't seem to get Swedish supergroup ABBA out of its system. Popular movies and a highly successful Broadway show boast their bouncy, almost 30-year-old songs. Their albums keep selling in the millions. And to honor the band's 25th anniversary in the late Nineties, the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus commissioned arranger David Maddux to work magic with ABBA's music. The result: ExtrABBAganza, a revue offering infectious tunes like "Waterloo," "Dancing Queen," and "Fernando." The South Beach Gay Men's Chorus will present its own twist on the work at 8:00 tonight and tomorrow at the Lincoln Theater (541 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach). ExtrABBAganza: A South Beach Drama will feature the ABBA hits woven around a plot loosely based on Private Lives, Noel Coward's 1930s play about a witty, wistful divorced couple.
