A creative compulsion led Miguel Fleitas from early stage aspirations to a career as a photographer, cameraman, and television director. But it was an unshakable passion for modern and contemporary art that recently drove Fleitas to make a switch to the canvas and brush. The self-taught artist has been creating a body of work celebrating the female form, and hopes to hit pay dirt with Private Landscapes, his first solo show, opening tonight at the Out of the Blue Cafe (2426 NE Second Avenue, Miami).
The boho eatery and coffeehouse has become a neighborhood fave with its funky environment and menu of fresh soups, sandwiches, and smoothies, and the fledgling establishment now plans to spotlight local talent in rotating shows. Fleitass paintings vibrate with color, and depict totemic female torsos with their breasts sumptuously exaggerated to emphasize the sensuality of women, the artist explains. Catch his feverish vision, knock back a shot of cognac courtesy of Hennessey, and ask hostess Carmen Miranda for the dime tour.
