Sure, the World Cup frenzy was fun for millions of beer-swilling fans, and that whole NBA Championship was way cool, but now is the time for a very important tournament to take place on local soil. Yes, we are talking about the World Adult Kickball Association Founders Cup World Kickball Championship! The red rubber balls will be bouncing all over Bicentennial Park from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, July 22, and today the victors (and losers) will drink to elementary schoolyard glory at a Bloody Mary Brunch at the Marriott Miami Biscayne Bay (1633 N. Bayshore Dr.) from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Jonathan Wickham, captain of team UVL from Broward, recently took time from his busy practice schedule to speak with us about the competition. “I’ve been playing a little over a year,” Wickham says. “I played in elementary school like everyone else. I retired for twenty years and then came back. It’s a little different.... There’s more strategy, more bunting.” Our own staff writer Trevor Aaronson will be kicking balls for UVL, so you know we’ll be out there with painted faces. Admission is free for spectators. Visit www.kickball.com for details.
July 22-23
