Baseball? Oops. Between the FIFA World Cup, the NBA Finals, and the WNBA All-Star Game (work it, Shoni Schimmel), we must’ve forgotten about our boys in Little Havana. Turns out the Fish aren’t that bad this year. At presstime, the Miami Marlins were 8.5 games back in the NL East, sandwiched between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies in fourth place. It’ll be tough, but even Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton thinks the team has a fighting chance at a playoff spot. “We don’t have much time to sit there creeping,” Stanton recently told reporters after the All-Star Game. “We have to make a push... Pretty much all of us are alive. We’re right there.” Elsewhere around the league, the Cincinnati Reds are “right there” too. They’re also in fourth place, but just 2.5 games back in a tight NL Central division. Both teams kick off a four-game series at Marlins Park (501 Marlins Way, Miami) this Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Best of all, tickets are free if you’re 55 or older thanks to the team’s season-long promotion Seniors Free Ticket Thursdays.
