Think of the new Miami Art Museum exhibit, "New Work Miami 2010," as CliffsNotes to the local contemporary art scene. Curator René Morales calls it a "complex show that represents a complex art community," but if pressed to summarize, he says a lot of the pieces deal with urban development and that Miami art has a "ruckus energy" stemming from rock 'n' roll and sci-fi tropes.
Among the 35 Miami artists, Beatriz Monteavaro employs classic punk rock and campy horror movie imagery in her sculptures. Kevin Arrow uses photo light boxes and a vintage slide projector to showcase discarded vacation images from Miami garage sales. Don Lambert shows a spinning disc sculpture inspired by Edwin Abbott's sci-fi novella, Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: July 17. Continues through Oct. 17, 2010
