Florida Grand Opera is grand, indeed, being one of the oldest opera houses in the nation. Its kicking off 2009 with the Superstar Concert Series which should star Molly Shannon from Saturday Night Live,/i>, but doesnt. Instead, FGO is pairing opera luminaries and giving them three concerts this year. The first concert, taking place this Saturday night, will star Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Ekaterina Siurina, who will perform arias and duets at 8 p.m. in the Arsht Centers Knight Concert Hall.
Hvorostovsky is a famous baritone who has hopscotched from one major opera house to another since debuting in Krasnoyarsk, his freezing-cold hometown in Siberia. He is one of three male opera singers in the Superstar Concert Series, including Marcelo Giordani and Bryn Terfel. Theyre the most in-demand male opera singers in the world, according to Florida Grand Opera. Because of their busy schedules, these men wont be able to do full shows, but theyll belt out pieces by maestros such as Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and Verdi, with renowned female singers by their sides and notorious conductors waving their wands. Theyre all ... supersssstars! The other two concerts will take place in March and April. Tickets cost $10 to $140. For more information, call 800-741-1010 or visit www.fgo.org.
