Anime Attack

The fifth annual Mizucon bills itself as an anime convention, and yeah, there's plenty to keep the Pikachu crowd entertained. If you're looking for a partner to share your Sailor Moon DVD collection, the Cupid's Rush Speed Dating event has you covered (9:30 p.m. Saturday in Panel Room 3). Then you can level up your newfound relationship with a workshop on shibari, the Japanese art of rope bondage (11 p.m. Saturday in Panel Room 1). That event is 18-plus, and participants are encouraged to bring two to three lengths of 25-foot rope. Take that, Fifty Shades of Grey. But though Mizucon specializes in anime, attractions here will appeal to every manner of geek. Extracurricular panels include workshops on making your own props, Star Trek discussions, and even getting your foot in the acting/directing door. The gamer geek can find a home at the various tournaments throughout the weekend, like a Halo 3 competition (7 p.m. Friday in the Game Room; registration is at 4 p.m.). The con runs from Friday through Sunday at the DoubleTree Miami Airport & Convention Center (711 NW 72nd Ave., Miami). Doors open at 11 a.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Pass prices range from $20 for Sunday to $45 for three days. Though passes will be available at the door, online registration is recommended. Visit
