Ever since Tyson-Holyfield II went bust in a blaze of near-cannibalism, the grand American game of boxing has slipped into listlessness and mediocrity. For decades, the USA has failed to produce a fighter at any weight who recalls great homegrown champs such as Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, or crazy old Iron Mike.

So, unfortunately, this Friday at 6 p.m., when ESPN Friday Night Fights brings the brawl to the Arena at D. Taft University Center (3301 College Ave., Davie), you won't witness the debut of America's brightest young hope. Instead, you'll see 41-year-old, Jamaica-born, Florida-bred Glen Johnson in his 65th pro bout. The former titleholder is scheduled to take on Yusaf Mack in an IBF light-heavyweight elimination match that will earn the winner a shot at reigning champion Tavoris Cloud. Adding extra bang for your buck, though, there will be six other fights, ranging from feather to welterweight.
