Tampa Wants to Break Miami's Food Truck Record: What's Next — Giant Guacamole? UPDATED
Will Miami retain its record?
Magic City Casino
A lot of world records have been set in Miami.
On October 11, 2009, chefs Michael Schwartz and Allen Susser led a group of high school students to break the Guinness World Record for the largest serving of guacamole. The portion weighed 4,114 pounds, by the way.
And on April 20, 2013 the Magic City Casino set the world record for the largest parade of food trucks, with 62 trucks driving two miles around Miami before serving food to a hungry crowd of about 8,000 people. The event also raised over $1,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which assists children with cancer.
Now, a Tampa food truck promoter wants to break our record by attempting to organize 100 food trucks at the Florida Fairgrounds on August 31.
According to WPTV, the Tampa rally is being organized by Tampa food blogger Carlos Hernandez, Jeremy and Candy Gomez of Generation Food Truck and Not Your Ordinary Food Truck, and Michael Lynch of Truckspotting.com, forming Skypunch Entertainment for the goal of breaking Miami's record.
According to the television station, the 100 Truck Rally is enlisting the help of food trucks from as far away as Toronto -- but will any Miami food trucks turn traitor and make the drive to Tampa over the weekend? According to the most updated list (which is still not final) on Generation Food Truck's Facebook page,
there are no Miami food trucks scheduled to participate. Updated: Looks like four food trucks from the south Florida area are planning to drive up to Tampa to participate.
Burger Beast Sef Gonzalez, who helped organize the record-breaking event at Magic City, seems unfazed about the proposed Tampa event, telling Short Order, "I don't care about them attempting to break the record, records are made to be broken."
Gonzalez also said he wouldn't attempt to have lightning strike twice in Miami.
"I personally have no interest in being involved with trying to reclaim the record if it is broken, " he told us.
And he's right. Because we're the ones that set it and that's really all that matters.
After all, isn't breaking the record something like dating Kim Kardashian? Sure it's all fun and games until you realize you just went where Ray J did... and he filmed it.
So Tampa, we leave you with this little advice. Go round up 100 food trucks and have your parade. And when you're done with that, we've got a shitload of overripe avocados you can help us get rid of. We'll bring the chips. You make the guacamole.
