Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins: Miami Bars Honor Him Tonight
It's not often a man gets a day in his name.
But today, we celebrate a man of booze and ink.
Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins would've turned 102 years-old this year -- and to commemorate his long, fruitful life, Brother Jimmy's BBQ, Sandbar Grill and Blackbird Ordinary are celebrating with Sailor Jerry spiced rum cocktails and specials.
Collins, the enlisted sailor, the tattoo artist, and the boozehound, is considered the "father of the old school tattoo." He inspired artists like Ed Hardy and the late Mike Malone. Artistic tastes aside, all three left their marks (no pun intended) on the American tattoo.

To honor his legacy, the Cane favorite hotspot, Sandbar Grill (which should be pretty college co-ed-free, since classes are over) will be offering $7 Sailor Moons (a shot of Sailor Jerry in Blue Moon beer) beginning at 8 p.m. Brother Jimmy's BBQ will be offering $5 Backyard Teas (Arnold Palmer with Sailor Jerry) and Sailor Moons beginning at 9:30 p.m. Brickell's Blackbird Ordinary will also be taking part in the occasion starting at 11 p.m.
Brother Jimmy's BBQ will also be inviting guests tonight to participate in a hula hoop contest. The winner will receive a Sailor Jerry duffel bag filled with a bucket-load of Sailor Jerry goodies.
Collins was the icon of rebellion during his life -- and a symbol of Americana in his life's wake. In the 1930s, he set up a small tattoo shop in Honolulu, and along with major advocacy, he helped revolutionize the ink industry by regulations of sanitation and sterilization that are still mandated to this day.

Whether you have an old faded tat, or fresh ink that's still raised, pay some tribute to a man who helped nudge along the American tattoo culture.
