Finding a way to get into the club is a rite of passage
for Miami's younger generation. If you don't already know someone at the door,
you better show up with the right ratio of males to females or you'll be
hovering at the front for hours.
Wouldn't it be great if the people at the door already
knew who you were, how often you visit, and whether you're a VIP?
"I've been working the nightclub and hotel circuit for
over 17 years," says Chad Love, creator of the new DoorMetrics app, available
for iPhone. "In that time, I noticed flaws in the way nightclubs keep track of their
patrons. I started the DoorMetrics project with the motivation of simplifying
the way people get into the club."
Love helped open the Shore Club and the Standard hotels and then worked for the Opium Group before spending the past four years at the
rooftop of the Gansevoort, now known as the Perry. During this time, he became
familiar with the bulky Palm Pilot-based ID scanners that most nightclubs use. The scanners, however, were expensive, not user-friendly, and unwieldy. The new DoorMetrics app costs only $9.99
in the app store and requires just an attachable scanner to work with your
current iPhone or iPod Touch.
Furthermore, Love's vision would eventually allow managers to run the entire door from their cell phones. Currently, the app keeps track of visits, ages, and whether the person is a VIP so you can manage guest lists and table reservations. The best feature might be the ability to keep the male-to-female ratio at par by checking demographics throughout the night. You don't need an Internet connection to use the app, and you can export history files easily into .CSV format. In the future, DoorMetrics will include a ticket-scanning feature for concerts or events, complete metrics, analytics, graphs, and other features.

"The idea is to get a better understanding of your clients and customers," Love says. "You begin learning who they are, how frequent they visit, and how you can better reward them."
The app, which has been available at the iTunes Store for about two months, is officially endorsed by Responsible Vendors Inc., has the approval of police departments, and is already being used at the Perry, Mynt, Wall, and the new Bamboo nightclub. Though you might still need to work magic to get into these places, at least when you return, they will know who you are. Through his experience, a ravenous appetite for technology, and a large network of friends in the industry, Love plans on taking DoorMetrics to hotels, bars, casinos, and nightclubs across the nation. Love's app development company, Velvet Rope Customs, LLC, is working on adding new features to the app as well as a free companion app for iPhone and Android.
