Khong River House, 50 Eggs' Lincoln Road Restaurant specializing in Thai street food, is closing its doors, apparently to make way for a new 50 Eggs concept, hatching this fall.
The restaurant, which will close after dinner service this Saturday, May 16, is moving to the mainland, with plans to reopen in the MiMo District, closer to where 50 Eggs' headquarters is being built. According to Eater, Khong's upstairs bar, Patpong Road will also close, though there's no word on whether the speakeasy named for Thailand's famous Red Light district will reopen at another location.
In a statement released today, 50 Eggs' CEO John Kunkel said:
"50 Eggs Inc. is pleased to announce that Khong River House will be relocating to Miami in order to make way for a new 50 Eggs concept coming to Miami Beach this fall. Khong will close after dinner service this Saturday May 16, after over two years of operating in Miami Beach. 50 Eggs has already invested in its new headquarters in the MiMo district, and believes in the vision of the surrounding areas including Little Haiti and Little River, and plans to move Khong to a location within this area. Executive Chef Patricia Yeo will remain a vital part of our team, related to details on future projects still being worked out. 50 Eggs, Inc., Khong River House and Chef Yeo thank guests for the overwhelming support shown for Khong River House on Miami Beach since its opening and look forward to welcoming each of them into our new location and other 50 Eggs properties and future projects."

The restaurant, which opened in December 2012, was an instant success and a second hit for restauranteur John Kunkel, who had previously opened Yardbird Southern Table & Bar just a few blocks away. Khong also made a name for chef Piyarat Areeratn (Chef Bee for short).
The restaurant garnered much praise. In a review, New Times critic Emily Codik praised the restaurant's first-class boat noodles. After being open less than a year, the restaurant was named a semi-finalist for the 2013 James Beard Awards. Shortly thereafter, Chef Bee abruptly left Khong RIver House that sparked a lawsuit between the two parties. Both Khong and Bee have since moved on, with Top Chef Masters' Patricia Yeo coming on board as executive chef. According to Kunkel, Yeo will remain under 50 Eggs' umbrella, though her future role hasn't been determined.
In the past, 50 Eggs planned a more casual Asian concept called Khong Fuzi, which was more of a noodle bar. It's possible that plans for the faster-service restaurant could be resurrected in the Khong Space. That would be a likely success and fit in with Lincoln Road's future, which seems to be morphing into a mid-priced shopping destination for tourists.
