North Miami residents will be able to get their hands on warm loaves when Great Harvest Bread Company opens its doors April 11.
The bakery, part of a Montana-based chain that was established in the 1970s, is the first location to open in South Florida. The Great Harvest Bread Company has more than 200 nationwide, with each bakery independently owned and operated.
The bakery specializes in handcrafted breads, made with whole-wheat flour ground daily from premium Montana wheat berries delivered to the shop. The freshly ground wheat must be used within two days to guarantee its nutritional value.
After the wheat is ground, it's made into dough using as few ingredients as possible. For instance, the honey whole wheat uses only water, honey, salt, yeast, and wheat flour. A rotating selection of breads includes cheddar garlic, cinnamon chip, Mediterranean olive, and old-fashioned white.
In addition to fresh loaves, Great Harvest Bread Company offers muffins, cookies, and scones as sweet treats and custom-made sandwiches. Sammie selections include turkey and Swiss, roast beef and provolone, and chimichurri roast beef. There's also a classic PB&J.
Owner Claude Juneau, who has a retail grocery background, is excited about opening the Miami location. "This will be the first bakery of its kind in the South Florida area to mill its own wheat daily for fresh whole-grain bread."
In addition to the aroma of freshly baked bread, further enticements to visit the shop include free high-speed Wi-Fi, plenty of electrical outlets, a reading library of books and magazines, and an indoor kiddie play area.
The bakery will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
