These little fried cakes go back to the 19th century, when Dutch settlers brought their version, the oliekoek, with them to the New World.
Whether you spell them doughnuts or donuts, we love them filled with jelly, covered in powdered sugar, coated with chocolate -- but most of all, we love them when they're free.
To celebrate National Doughnut Day on June 1, both Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts are offering free treats -- just for the asking. Here's the dealio:
Krispy Kreme
Stop in at Krispy Kreme for a free doughnut. No purchase is necessary -- just ask. For an even warmer experience, be sure to visit during the stores' red-light hours, when doughnuts arrive straight from the oven, the doughnut still warm and the glaze moist.
Red-light hours for the Miami location (590 NE 167th St.) are from 5:30 to 11 a.m., and again from 4:30 to 11 p.m, daily.
Red-light hours for the Florida City location (32999 S. Dixie Hwy.) are 6 to 11 a.m., and again from 6 to 11 p.m. daily.

Dunkin' Donuts
Participating Dunkin' Donuts locations in South Florida will offer guests a free doughnut of their choice (while supplies last) with the purchase of any beverage. Tweet your DD love to @DDSofla.
Dunkin' is also giving away free aliens as a tie-in to Men in Black 3.
